Theory Jean Piaget

A child in the preoperational stage also lacks the principle of conservation. This is the knowledge that quantity is unrelated to the arrangement and physical appearance of objects. Children who have not passed this stage do not know that the amount, volume or length of an object does not change length when the shape of the configuration is changed.  Piaget declared that this is not mastered until the next stage of development. The concrete operational stage lasts from the age of seven to twelve years of age. The beginning of this stage is marked by the mastery of the principal of conservation.

Introduction on Volume of Liquid

Volume of liquid refers to the capacity of liquids in the containers. Capacity of liquids in the containers. Capacity can be measured by using non standard units (more or less) and in standard units in millitres(ml) and litres (l) in the metric system.

When measuring a small liquid volume , such as a dosage of cough syrup, the unit is millitres. A slightly larger volume ,like the amount of flour or sugar would be measured using cups. Meanwhile the volume of a large amount for example a bottle of milk, can be measured using litres.

Objectives

These lessons are designed for grade 2. Upon completion of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
  • measure liquids.
  • understand the importance of knowing and using the measurements.
  • observe shapes and sizes in measurements.
  • discover and apply rules for measuring liquids.

Teaching Aids 1- (activity 1 & activity 2)

For high achiever and low achiever , we use same materials but different activities. The different size and shapes of containers been used for the activities.

Activities been carried out in the Science lab. Cylinders different sizes been used for group activity.

Activity 1 - High Achiever

                                                http://www.mediafire.com/?2lijidiaxfi4mnj

Pupils been introduced to the vocabulary 'empty', 'half full' and 'full'.. Volume of liquid will be determined based on the containers used. A small cup is used as the measurement tool. The more bigger containers the more quantities of water is needed to fill in.

Activity 2 - Low Achiever

                                                     http://www.mediafire.com/?ef4zb1515pyoj0b

Pupils observe and compare height, weight, small, larger, lighter, short. Pupils been introduced to the vocabulary 'empty', half full' and 'full'. Comparisons on containers which hold more or less water.
The bigger containers show more volume of liquid while the smaller containers give us less volume of liquid.

Activity 3 - High achiever

                                           http://www.mediafire.com/?lcts5bpalt7b3xx

For this activities pupils know that volume of liquid can be measured by using metrics units such millitres and litre. They also understanding the relationship between both measurement tools. Pupils read the measurement in ml and l.

Activity 4 - Low Achiever

                                                  http://www.mediafire.com/?o5a51e5zlo3jtmd

For this activity pupils know that volume of liquid just under estimation. By using metric units such ctimillitres and litres. We can find more accurate with the results. Pupils will learn that high level of water doesn't mean that capacity is high. Capacity volume of liquid measured by calibrated cylinders.
